Donnie Darko

I just finished watching (for the first time) Donnie Darko. Not quite sure what to make of it yet. I have the distinct impression that there is something quite profound here but i'm not quite sure what it is yet.
I came across a link to the Donnie Darko FAQ in the IMDB forums.
At this point, though i'm tempted to dive directly into the Donnie Darko site which is supposedly

gives a huge amount of additional information, and is arguably essential viewing to completely understand the film. The web site was written in conjunction with the film by the Writer/Director, Richard Kelly

But at the same time, it also cautions:

Watch the movie, ideally as many times as possible because once you go to Step 2 you can never go back :-)

So, for the moment, i'm putting everything else aside. The official site, the site that explains the official site, the copy of "The Philosophy of Time Travel" and will be waiting until I can get in a few more viewings of the movie.

How I ended up finding out about this movie is something that was so by chance and simultaniously it perplexes me that for the past four years I have never even HEARD of this movie.
On the September 29th, 2005 episode of CSI "Room Service" and the show both opened and closed with the song Mad World by Tears for Fears (to clarify, i'm not 100% sure that Tears for Fears wrote this song, but I know they were my first exposure to it). Anyway, I searched high and low for the song, in fact, purchasing every copy of "Mad World" off of iTunes, save for one, because it was only purchaseable by album. In the end a friend who watched the episode clued me into the fact that that was the copy I was after. So, I was curious, what is this Donnie Darko thing? A few days later I had a copy off BitTorrent, a few days later I watched it. It's most definitely too soon to make any conclusions about the movie, but I will say this, it's definitely one of those movies that pisses off people that like uncomplicated, simple movies that are easy to understand. And, generally, I like movies like that, where the vast majority of people who watch the movie are unable or unwilling to invest enough brain power to understand the movie. Think: American Beauty. For now, I can only say that I do like the movie, how much? Only time, and a half dozen more viewings, will tell.
