**SPOILER ALERT**

So, I finally watched the final episode of six feet under. It was very good. The final montage where they go into the future and tell you what happens to everyone was one of the best TV endings for a series. EVER.
So, I figured I would catalogue and chronicle exactly what happened in that final 6:30 of the show.

The montage starts exactly when Claire leaves the Fisher house for the final time. Getting into her car and popping the Mix CD (it just doesn't sound as good as Mix Tape — a better argument against CDR's I have never heard) into her CD player. The first (and only song that we hear is Breathe Me by Sia. This song has stuck with me since I first heard it this morning. I do sometimes wonder if such a song would be nearly as powerful if not for the weight of the past five seasons hanging on it. I am sure the answer is no.
The show then cuts to a view of Nate running behind Claires car as seen from the rear view mirror. He slowly dissapears, falling behind the car.
We then see Ruth and Bettina sitting on the porch at Sarah's house, amusing themselves throwing balls to a flock of golden retrievers out on the lawn. The Ruth we see here is happy, we are given the impression that a considerable amount of time has passed.
Cut back to Claire driving down a stretch of a CA highway.
Back at the Fisher house David is instructing Durrell about the finer points of embalbing.
In Claire's car everything is running in fast-forward making it look like she is traveling very fast.
Back again we see Brenda holding Marcie, its her birthday, It looks like she is two or three years old. We also see Maya, Ruth, Olivier, Margaret. Billy is there, being his usual cheerful self. Anthony, Durrell, Keith and David are there as well. They look like they have finally become a real family. In the final wide shot we see George.
Back with Claire, who now seems to be traveling at a much higher rate of speed.
Cut to David and Nates wedding. Durrell and Anthony are the ring bearers. We see Maya, who now looks much older, perhaps 7 or 8 years old, sitting next to Brenda who is sitting next to some guy who is holding Marcie.
We also see Federico and Vanessa, sitting together holding hands. Presumably they have made up with the Fishers and are now invited to the family functions again. We see Claire, taking photographs — of course, Using what looks suspiciously like a Nikon D70 (I guess the D70 sticks with us for a while). She is using a nice macro lens though. Quite appropriate.
Back with Claire, who is traveling even faster now.
Fast forward — we are in the hospital, Ruth is laying in a hospital bed with George, Claire and David surrounding her. Cut to a close-up of her face, she does not look well. Cut to Nathaniel (Senior) smiling at Ruth from across the room. Cut back to Ruth and then to Nathaniel (Junior). As Ruths eyes slide shut George's face makes us begin to realize what HBO has in store for us.

Ruth O'Conner Fisher

At Ruth's funeral we see a blurry figure approaching from the background. Maya, who is now all-growed-up, based on the date of Ruth's death she should be about 22-23 years old. We also see Durrell or Anthony (it really could be either) who is also all-growed-up. Cut to Claire and the shadowy figure is revealed to be Ted, Claire's one-time-flame.
Back to Claire in her car, traveling faster then ever.
We see a large armored car, emblazoned with "Charles Security." Keith gets out of the back and is promptly shot by some people who are stealing something from the vehicle.

Keith Dwayne Charles
1968-2029

Back with Claire who is driving down some small 2-lane highway. The twilight reflecting off her car.
We cut to what looks like Maya's wedding. There are many new unfamilar faces here. We see David, sitting directly in the middle. At his right is Durrell holding the hand of an unnamed asian man. We see Brenda, looking quite regal sitting next to the man we first met at Keith and David's wedding.

Now at some kind of family picnic. We first see a much aged Brenda ( still looking quite regal ) leaning in to talk to Maya
Cut to an unnamed man sitting next to David eating.
We then see David watching a group of the younger family members playing football and soon he inexplicably sees Keith playing. Keith runs over to David who promptly colapses

David James Fisher
1969-2044

Now on some kind of futuristic-looking cruise ship. A man gets up off of a chaise lounge and after leaning in to talk to his wife promptly colapses on the deck.
That person is then revealed to be:

Hector Federico Diaz
1974-2049

Back to the sun glinting off of Claire's car, which is now traveling even faster then ever.
We see Billy looking quite old and haggered, and finally pan to Brenda, some kind of nervous twitch causing half her body to twitch. Her head simply falls backward, her eyes closing. Billy staggers over with his cain trying to revive her.

Brenda Chenowith
1969-2051

Back to Claire in the car again, driving across the desert.
Cut to a closeup of a wall with a bunch of pictures hanging. Pan to reveal an old frail woman lying in bed.
Cut to show even more pictures, including the first "torn face" picture.
Cut to reveal a wider shot of the room, a young woman sitting reading in the same room with the old lady.
Back to more pictures, including ones of Nate & Brenda, Keith & David, Maya & Her Husband.
Cut to the old lady.
Cut to one of the pictures of Ted that she took earlier in this episode.
Cut to her eyes, old and frail.

Claire Simone Fisher
1983-2085

Returning to Claire in the present on a closeup of her eyes and drawing back to reveal a wide stretch of road in front of us.
The camera slowly pans up to the sky.
Simultaniously the saddest and most joyus six minutes of TV you will ever watch.

  1. Diane:

Agreed, the best episode ending ever and a well written synopsis. Was Brenda’s babys’ name Marcie or Willa? I thought the wedding was Claire and Teds.
